Want to click with your horse?  Connie Dwyer is located nearby in Harpursville and clicker trains horses.  Connie is now a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT), having passed her certification exam in March.  Congratulations Connie!  Connie will be teaching clicker training classes at the Cornell Cooperative Extension building on Upper Front St.  As the only two CPDTs in the Greater Binghamton area, Connie and I have discussed jointly teaching some clicker classes some time in the future!  You can visit Connie's website at:

Recommended Reading

<<<NEW>>> Bringing Light to Shadow by Pam Dennison.  This book is actually a diary (almost daily) of what Pam (an experienced trainer) encountered rehabilitating her rescued and fearful, human aggressive Border Collie with positive, no force training methods.  I highly recommend this book for anyone have a similar problem and dealing with the ups and downs of management and training any dog with aggression issues.

Click to Calm by Emma Parsons.  This book has just been published and explains how to use the clicker to fix aggressive behavior in dogs.

Culture Clash by Jean Donalson.  If there is one book to read to understand dog behavior and the human/dog relationship and training...it is this one!  I recommend this book to anyone owning a dog.

Positive Perspectives by Pat Miller, former president of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).  An excellent and easy to read book on positive and fun training methods for all dogs.

Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor.  The book that started the trend toward clicker training.  This book teaches you how to use positive reinforcement methods in your daily interaction with family, friends and acquaintences to have better and more productive relationships.

Click for Joy by Melissa Alexander.  An excellent book on all aspects of clicker training.  Great for the beginner as well as the accomplished clicker trainer.

Bones Would Rain From the Sky by Susan Clothier.  Simply a must read for any dog lover.  The depth of Susan's understanding and compassion for dogs is breathtaking.  You will love it and learn a lot too.

The Other End of the Leash by Dr. Patricia McConnell.  A focus on why people do what they do when around their dogs.  Another excellent book on creating a better understanding of our dogs and the changes we need to make in order to have socially acceptable family pets.

Dogs by Drs. Raymond and Lorna Copinger.  An excellent study on how dogs became dogs.  For anyone interested in the evolution of dogs, this book compiles the latest scientific evidence regarding how dogs developed from the earliest know fossils dating back 18,000 years to today.

EXCEL-erated Learning:  Explaining how dogs learn and how best to teach them by Dr. Pamela J. Reid, Ph.D.  For those interested in understanding the basics of learning theory and how it applies to dogs, this is one of the easiest and clearly written books on the subject.
