Why is early socialization important?

Proper socialization of puppies prior to 4 months of age is a critical factor for their behavioral development and the lack of proper early socialization is a primary cause of behavioral problems in adult dogs.

Puppies go through very specific stages of development.  One critical period of puppy development ends at 49 days from birth and another critical socialization window closes between 12-14 weeks of age.  At this age and below, puppies tend to easily learn not to fear new things and how to develop appropriate social behavior toward other dogs and people.  If this critical period of socialization is missed, puppies are much more likely to develop behavior problems, such as fear aggression, later in life.

What is Terry Ryan's S.O.C.I.A.L. Puppy?

Terry Ryan has been training dogs for over 30 years and is a renowned and innovative trainer.  Besides the owner and operator of Legacy Canine, Inc. in Seattle, Washington, Terry is a fellow faculty member with the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior.  Terry has graciously provided her puppy class exercises to Clicking With Canines for the development of this class.

S.O.C.I.A.L Puppy represents six categories that are important for your puppy's development:  Strange surroundings; Opportunity for training; Care and handling; Interesting stuff; Associate new dogs and people; and Living together.  You and your puppy will experience an exercise from each of these categories during each class and handouts with additional exercises from each category will be provided.  These exercises are designed to get your puppy off to an excellent start with socialization, good manners, training and learning, as well as care and handling skills for the puppy parents.  You and your puppy will also be introduced to clicker training!

What else comes with class?

Included in the class will be Premier's "Ultimate Puppy Tool-Kit" (a $20. value) as well as a clicker with wrist coil, treat bag, and behavior handouts.

When can your puppy start?

Your puppy may start class when 7-8 weeks old AND at least 7-10 days after their initial vaccination for Distemper/Parvo combination and Bordatella.  Proof of vaccination from your vet is required at the first class.  Puppies can be no older than 16 weeks on the first day of class.

What does "drop-in" mean?

For your convenience, once registered you may simply "drop-in" at any of the scheduled classes (see below).  Classes will initially be scheduled four times each week with more or less classes scheduled depending upon demand.  If a class has to be cancelled it will be reflected in the schedule below.  It is recommended you check it before leaving home for a class.
